March 2012 (35.685 Degrees, 139.827 Degrees) Shinkai Bridge |
I couldn't find much information on our next bridge, the Shinkai Bashi. It carries Route 306 across the Onagi Gawa just like the previously studied
Fukujin Bashi carries Route 306 across the Kita Jikkengawa to the north. Both bridges are owned by the city of Tokyo, but the Shinkai Bridge looks older. It has a three span haunched girder superstructure with a drop in span and multicolumn bents that was very typical for bridges built around 1930 in Tokyo. Note they managed to build one pier on the bank while the other is in the middle of the canal. If we look at a plan view of the bridge (below) we can see how the bridge has been placed slightly to the north of the canal, perhaps to avoid having to build two piers in the water.
