Tokyo Japan's Bridges: Fan and Toneri Liner Bridges across the Arakawa

March 2012 (35.758 Degrees, 139.771 Degrees) Fan and Toneri Liner Bridges
The Nippori-Toneri Liner is an automated guideway line that allows commuters to avoid the heavy traffic on Route 58. In the photo above we see the Fan Highway Bridge crowded with standing traffic while the adjacent Toneri Liner Bridge whisks 50,000 passengers a day across the Arakawa. This bridge gave engineers a chance to play with traditional bridge forms in new and striking ways. It is a continuous rigid steel frame with unusually-shaped piers on concrete caissons.

These bridges are a continuation of the Adachi-ku Bridges we saw crossing the Sumida River in my blog of April 25, 2012.
