San Joaquin County, California Bridges: UP Rough and Ready Island Bridge across the San Joaquin River

April 2014 (37.94754, -121.33721) UP Rough and Ready Island Bridge
Just north of yesterday's Navy Drive Bridge is the UP Rough and Ready Island Bridge. Rough and Ready Island was a WWII naval supply depot that was closed down along with other military bases in the 1990s. For some reason, swing bridges were very popular across the San Joaquin River in the first half of the 20th century. The Happy Pontist reflects on some the pluses and minuses of swing bridges in a recent post

The UP Rough and Ready Island Bridge is a Warren through truss swing bridge over the San Joaquin River. It's a narrow bridge carrying a single set of railroad tracks. Like yesterday's Navy Drive Bridge it has a long (220 ft) swing span and short approach spans.
