Monterey County, California Bridges: Cattlemen Road Bridge across the Salinas River

The Cattleman Road Bridge is a deck truss structure. However, the vegetation is so dense around the bridge that I had a hard time photographing the truss, which is some distance from the approaches. The photo on the east end (above) shows the concrete T beam approach to the bridge. The photo below (from the Historic 101 website) shows the deck truss section on the west side of the bridge. The Cattlemen Road Bridge (44C0101) is a 1654 ft long bridge across the Salinas River Floodplain. According to Craig Philpott the bridge's unusual appearance is due to a recent seismic retrofit that included a continuous barrier rail to hold the bridge together and restrain the movement on this long structure. Note the exterior pile shafts to restrain transverse displacement along with the shear keys on top of the extended bent caps.

San Mateo County, California Bridges: State Route 1 Bridge across San Gregorio Creek (1)

After the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake I managed a research contract with Prof. Saiidi at the University of Nevada in Reno to look at how cable restrainers performed on bridges including on the San Gregorio Creek Bridge (35 0030) that carries the Pacific Coast Highway. The bridge was built in 1941 and retrofitted with restrainers in 1984. It is a five span haunched T girder bridge that is 266 ft long and 31 ft wide. In the photo above Prof. Saiidi (second from right) is standing with his students (and me) on the beach in front of the bridge.

Napa County, California Bridges: Lincoln Avenue Bridge across the Napa River

The next bridge upstream across the Napa River is the Lincoln Avenue Bridge (21C0011). It's a continuous reinforced concrete T girder bridge on big pier walls and a 40 degree skew. It's composed of four, 64 ft long spans and carries two traffic lanes, a bicycle lane, and a sidewalk in each direction.

Hawaii's Bridges: Hawaii Belt Road over Wailoa Stream

Just west of Lihiwai Street is a two span bridge that carries Kamehameha Avenue over Wailola Stream at Hilo Harbor. It is a continuous two-span T girder bridge that was built in 1938 and rebuilt/retrofitted in 1993. There are shear keys on the abutments and on the hammerhead bent, perhaps to protect the bridge from tsunami.

There are many reminders of past tsunami along the road including a clock that survived the 1946 tsunami but was stopped at the time of the 1960 tsunami, at 1:04 AM. I saw many similarly stopped clocks along the Japanese coast after the March 2011 tsunami. The community that lived along the shore here was destroyed, many people were killed, and the residential neighborhoods were never rebuilt but turned into parks.
