Shasta County, California Bridges: Quartz Hill Road Underpass (1)

October 2014 (40.5930 Degrees, -122.3999 Degrees) Sacramento River Railroad Viaduct

We rode our bikes along the Sacramento River Bike Trail from the Keswick Dam downhill into Redding. Continuing on the trail we came to the Quartz Hill Road (Redding Trestle) Underpass (06C0143). It's a long steel girder bridge on a tight radius curve (for a railroad) with tall steel towers and with concrete piers supporting three deck truss spans over the river. The bridge is currently owned by the Union Pacific Railroad. The deck is 110 ft above the river in order to climb (and descend) the hills north of town. It was built in 1939, as part of a new alignment required by the damming of the Pit and Sacramento Rivers.

Shasta County, California Bridges: Lake Redding and Diestelhorst Bridges

October 2014 (40.5930, -122.4018) Sacramento River Bridges

The Diestelhorst Bridge is a five span open spandrel arch bridge built in 1915 on land originally owned by Gotlieb Diestelhorst. The designer was A V Spah and the builder was Chico Construction. It was converted to a bike and pedestrian bridge with vehicular traffic diverted onto the Lake Redding Bridge in 1997. The new bridge has the same general shape as the old bridge but is more modern and streamlined in appearance. Note the bottom of the arches come together in a 'U' shape and they're pinned longitudinally at the caissons. The substructure is quite narrow with wide overhangs on the superstructure. This bridge was designed by Mark Ketchum whose other bridges (Carquinez Suspension Bridge, University Avenue POC) have been admired on this website.

In this photo we can see the new Lake Redding Bridge and beyond it the Quartz Hill Road Underpass across the Sacramento River in Redding. I'm standing on the old Diestelhorst Bridge taking this photo. We'll take a closer look at all of these bridges in the next few blogs.
