A little east of yesterday's Cottonwood Slough Bridge the slough crosses CR-25 again and so they had to build another Cottonwood Slough Bridge (22C0102).It's a one span (40 ft long) reinforced concrete T beam bridge (on a 32 degree skew) that was built in 1917.

Moving north of Winters onto County Road 25 and the Cottonwood Slough Bridge (22C0075). It's a 108 ft long single span truss bridge that was built in 1932. Cottonwood Slough meanders back and forth so many times across CR25 that there are a half dozen Cottonwood Slough Bridges. This bridge sits on steel bearings bolted to little concrete abutments on each side of the slough.

Its a Pratt through truss that was rehabilitated in 1956. It's in fair condition with an S.R. of 44.3% and only a 12 ft wide deck. However, it has a surprising 16 ft vertical clearance above the deck and carries about 90 vehicles a day on this lonely country road.

Note the big floor beams sticking way out beyond the deck. This bridge must have been originally designed for a wider deck! The bottom chord includes a tension member at the bottom of the floor beams and double eyebars at the top of the floor beams. This a nice little bridge!

Yolo County, California Bridges: Bridges across Putah Creek in Winters

A view of the two bridges across Putah Creek in Winters. Both bridges are over 100 years old. The truss bridge has been given a new life as a footbridge. However, the Winters Road Arch Bridge is going to torn down and replaced by a new bridge! According to an article in the Daily Republic they are going to build a temporary bridge, tear down the existing bridge, and then build a new bridge in its place. The county engineer, Matt Tuggle said that the scouring has removed the soil around the timber piles, making the existing bridge unsafe.

Considering the piers aren't even in the creek that statement makes little sense. However, I guess it's possible that during the winter the creek becomes much wider. Also, since the bridge is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places they aren't allowed to remove it without a thorough environmental review.
