El Dorado County, California Bridges: Mt Aukum Bridge across the Middle Fork of the Cosumnes River (3)

January 2013 (38.6254 Degrees, -120.7015 Degrees) Mount Aukum Road Bridge
A few last pictures of the Mount Aukum Road Bridge. In an earlier post I said the columns must be Corten Steel but Corten is ASTM A242 or A588 steel while these columns are made from ASTM A441 steel that was sandblasted and left unpainted. I guess these 3/8 thick column walls are adequate for vertical loads but they probably would fail for even a small lateral load.
Fortunately the seismicity of this site is practically zero. So, all in all, a very interesting bridge.
Like many other newer bridges we've looked at, there is an older reinforced concrete open spandrel arch bridge sitting nearby. We'll take a look at it tomorrow.
