Placer County, California Bridges: Sierra Blvd Bridge across the Union Pacific (3)

August 2012 (38.7542 Degrees, -121.2849 Degrees) Sierra Blvd Bridge
A few last photos of this old arch bridge. According to the Bridgehunter, the deck condition is good, the superstructure is good, and the substructure is satisfactory, so the owners would only need to address its functional obsolescence (which could be difficult).

It has a sufficiency rating of 51.4 (out of 100) according to the last inspection in April of 2011. The average Daily Traffic (ADT) as of 1975 was 2960 vehicles a day.

Placer County, California Bridges: Sierra Blvd Bridge across the Union Pacific (2)

August 2012 (38.7542 Degrees, -121.2849 Degrees) Sierra Blvd Bridge
The Sierra Blvd. Overhead (19C0067) carries two traffic lanes and a sidewalk over the Union Pacific Railway Line. The arch span is 86.9 ft long and the bridge is 363.9 ft long, 30.2 ft wide (edge of deck to edge of deck) and it's on a tight horizontal curve.

It was built in 1929 making it eligible for registration as a historic structure. However, its functionally obsolete (lower load carrying capacity, narrower shoulders, and less clearance than bridges built to current standard). So the City of Roseville would have to spend a lot of money and do some work if they want to save this Beaux Art style concrete bridge.

Placer County, California Bridges: Sierra Blvd Bridge across the Union Pacific (1)

Bridges are often used to provide grade separations between roads and rails. When the bridge carries the railway over  the roadway we call it an Underpass. When a bridge carries the roadway over a railway we call in an Overhead.

Roseville (like Auburn and Colfax) is a railway town with underpasses and overheads (and at-grade crossings). Today's bridge carries a city street, Sierra Blvd. over the Union Pacific line. It has a pony arch main span and concrete slab approach spans. We'll take a closer look at this bridge tomorrow.
