Los Angeles County, California Bridges: State Route 134 Bridges across the Los Angeles River

August 1999 (34.1531 Degrees, -118.2791 Degrees) Los Angles River Bridges

After flowing under the I-5 (Golden State) and SR-134 (Ventura) Freeways the Los Angeles River makes a sharp turn to the south. In this photo we are looking back north at two SR-134 bridges across the L.A. River with the rugged Verdugo Mountains behind them. In the front is the Los Angeles River Bridge and Overhead (53 1790), a 14-span continuous concrete box girder bridge on pier walls with columns on top. Behind it is the West 134/5 Connector Bridge and Overhead (53 1790H), a 27-span continuous concrete box girder bridge on pier walls with columns on top. Both bridges were built in 1967 and were seismically retrofitted in 1993.

Los Angeles County, California Bridges: Burbank Boulevard Bridges across the Los Angeles River

August 2009 (34.1706 Degrees, -118.4781 Degrees) Los Angeles River Bridges

On the east side of the Woodley/Balboa Parks are two 3-span box girder bridges across the Los Angeles River. These handsome bridges have sloping piers and undulating deck overhangs. We previously visited them on February of 2009. The Burbank Blvd Bridges (53C1047 and 53C1109) were built in 1974 by Los Angeles County. Photos of the bridges are included in the collection of the Getty Museum, however I don't know who designed them or why they have different bridge numbers. Note how the Los Angeles River has returned to its natural condition at this location.
