San Mateo County, California Bridges: State Route 1 Bridge across San Gregorio Creek (1)

After the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake I managed a research contract with Prof. Saiidi at the University of Nevada in Reno to look at how cable restrainers performed on bridges including on the San Gregorio Creek Bridge (35 0030) that carries the Pacific Coast Highway. The bridge was built in 1941 and retrofitted with restrainers in 1984. It is a five span haunched T girder bridge that is 266 ft long and 31 ft wide. In the photo above Prof. Saiidi (second from right) is standing with his students (and me) on the beach in front of the bridge.

San Mateo County, California Bridges: Ryder Park Bridge across San Mateo Creek (3)

The Ryder Park Bridge carries the Bay Trail across San Mateo Creek. When completed, the trail will extend for 500 miles around San Francisco Bay. We came across the trail last month at the Bay Farm Island Bridges in Alameda County and at many other bridge locations around the Bay (see map below). The bridge sits between Ryder Park and Seal Point Dog Park, which used to be the city dump.

San Mateo County, California Bridges: Ryder Park Bridge across San Mateo Creek (2)

Another view of the Ryder Park Bridge. This 105 ft long pedestrian arch bridge has a minimal superstructure to allow the flood waters from San Mateo Creek to flow unobstructed into San Francisco Bay. The bridge was designed by Endres Ware, which is an architecture and engineering studio located in Berkeley California.
The bridge in composed of battered concrete caissons holding a tubular steel arch rib that supports a timber deck on 'V' shaped floor beams (and a central spine) hanging from steel rods. The deck is isolated from the arch and sits lightly on the embankments on each side of the bridge.
