Niigata, Japan's Bridges: Yonahime Bridge on Route 8 (5)

August 2007 (37.3247 Degrees, 138.4513 Degrees) Yonahime Bridge
A few last photos of the Yonahime Bridge. In the above photo, a building next to the bridge has fallen off its foundation. The photo below shows the various walkways under the bridge and the steep mountain slope supporting the bridge.

Niigata, Japan's Bridges: Yonahime Bridge on Route 8 (4)

August 2007 (37.3247 Degrees, 138.4513 Degrees) Yonahime Bridge
Another post on the Yonahime Bridge. Note the wind sock at the approach to the bridge. Perhaps drivers are cautioned not to drive across the long span bridge on windy days?
The purpose of today's blog is to show the cross-bracing damage that occurred during the 2007 Kashiwazaki Earthquake. In the photo above we can see that the bridge has racked, putting the cross-bracing into compression, which buckled.
Although not a serious problem, it is indicative of the movement the bridge experienced during the earthquake.

Niigata, Japan's Bridges: Yonahime Bridge on Route 8 (3)

August 2007 (37.3247 Degrees, 138.4513 Degrees) Yonahime Bridge
Another view of the Yonahime Bridge. We can see some fresh asphalt at the ends of the bridge because of the bearing damage and also due to settlement of the approaches.
